Partnership between MCU and SVSU

Over the past 10 years, Ming Chuan University (MCU) has built a close relationship with Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU). The two institutions have developed several successful exchange programs. Over the years, SVSU has sent 5 classes of Roberts Fellows and 3 groups of Michigan educators, through the Gerstacker Fellowship Program, for educational visits at MCU and MCU has sent more than 50 students to study on the Cardinals’ campus in Saginaw. Both MCU and SVSU have attained regional institutional accreditation in the States, under the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and the Higher Learning Commission, respectively.

With support from SVSU, MCU officially established operations in facilities on the SVSU campus in 2013, which is known as Ming Chuan University-Michigan Location and is recognized by both Michigan State Government and the Taiwan Ministry of Education. Some potential joint programs are under development, with a Master of Arts in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language as the first to be launched. This academic program is the result of collaboration between the MCU Department of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and the College of Education at SVSU. As Dr. Chuan Lee, President of MCU, has stated, “Without SVSU’s significant cooperation, we couldn’t have made educational history in Taiwan this year (2013) as the first Taiwan university to have a U.S. campus. As you know, MCU is now offering education in space on the SVSU campus, so we officially have a MCU – Michigan Location. This has been a dream of mine for over 10 years.”

It is anticipated that continued mutually beneficial collaboration will take place and that MCU will continue its journey of glocalization – the synergy of globalization plus localization – with the full support of SVSU. At the same time, SVSU will thrive in internationalization through MCU’s strong Asian connections.
